New robots with human-like eyes Posted by Ehab in Wed Apr 18, 2007 10:53 pm
A new breed of robots could soon break free of assembly line duties to assist human living in myriad ways.
MIT researchers recently demonstrated the capabilities of such a robot, named Domo, which, like the robot in a recent General Motors ad, can transcend mass-production's repetition. It is designed to interact with humans and adapt to its environment in ways previously only imagined in science fiction.
Presently, Domo can identify objects, reach for them and place them on shelves. Unlike an assembly-line robot, Domo can sense its surroundings using a pair of video cameras for eyes; they are connected to 12 computers. The cameras are built into remarkably human-looking "eyeballs," for a reason, said Domo's developer, Aaron Edsinger.
"I found that, by making them immediately understandable as eyes, it was very easy to read [Domo's] eye-gaze direction, which is important when working with it," Edsinger said. "They also greatly increase people's comfort level with the robot."
Domo has been designed to tune into unexpected motion, allowing it to function within human environments. It is especially sensitive to human faces, which is necessary for social interaction. When Domo spots motion resembling a human face, the robot locks on it.
A recent demonstration showed off Domo's voice recognition capabilities. "Hey, Domo," Edsinger said, and Domo responded in kind. "Shelf, Domo," Edsinger said. Domo gingerly reached for a nearby shelf with an arm-like appendage of metal and wires, and touched the shelf to verify its existence.
Next, Edsinger placed a bag of coffee beans in Domo's other hand. By wiggling it and making optical measurements, Domo deduced the size of the object. Then Domo figured out how to transfer the bag from one hand to the other, and then placed the bag on the shelf.
A robot capable of such tasks may serve many useful purposes for the elderly or mobility-impaired, especially in light of aging Baby Boomers.
Edsinger, who has worked on Domo for the past three years, describes it as the "next generation" of MIT robots. Domo follows in the robotic footsteps of Kismet, designed for human interaction, and Cog, which had the capability of manipulating unfamiliar objects.
Unlike its predecessors, Domo also has the ability to sense touch, necessary for safe interaction with humans. Springs in its arms, hands and neck can sense force, allowing it to respond appropriately. Pushing its hand will make it move in the direction of the push.
"By placing that spring in there, you get physical compliance that makes the whole body sort of springy, which makes it safer for human interaction," Edsinger said. But too much force or moving Domo's arms in the wrong direction will produce a vocal response of "ouch."
Original funding for Domo came from NASA, and the project is now supported by Toyota, which could apply such a robot for assembly line production. Intelligent robots could work together with people to make workers more productive and save manufacturing jobs from being sent overseas, Edsinger said.
The name "Domo" was inspired by the Japanese phrase, domo arigato [thank you very much], Edsinger told LiveScience, and also by the Styx song, "Mr. Roboto." Also, the two strong syllables are easy for the speech recognition system to understand.

The technological advance can’t be stopped. And a good proof of this is a new message announced by US government: they plan to put a first internet router in space. The Department of Defense’s Iris project will put an internet router in space by the start of 2009. It will allow voice, video and data communications for US troops using standards developed for the internet. Eventually Iris could extend the net into space, allowing data to flow directly between satellites, rather than sending it via ground stations. “Iris is to the future of satellite-based communications what Arpanet was to the creation of the internet in the 1960s,” said Don Brown, of Intelsat General, one of the companies who will build the platform.
The Iris (Internet Router Protocol in Space) project has been given the go ahead after winning funding from the US Department of Defense, under its Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD) programme. The programme aims to develop advanced concepts and put “innovative concepts into the hands of war fighters in the field.” The Iris project is one of seven that has been given funding this year. Others include development of smart sensors and counter camouflage technology. The specially designed equipment will be developed by network specialist Cisco while the geostationary satellite, IS-14, will be built by Intelsat. When launched in 2009 it will allow troops to communicate over the internet from the remotest regions from Europe Africa and the Americas. “Iris extends the internet into space, integrating satellite systems and the ground infrastructure for warfighters, first responders and others who need seamless and instant communications,” said Bill Shernit, CEO of Intelsat general. After initial testing the satellite will be opened up for commercial use. I think it’s just a matter of days till someone comes with a theory of special spying satellites and their secret usage by this programme - but that’s something already possible with current technology… Last comment was by Ehab (0 comments | 1101 views) Best Overall Skinner of the 2006 GUI Championships! A great fruit cake recipie Posted by virus2sirus in Mon Apr 23, 2007 12:37 pm
You'll need the following: a cup of water, a cup of sugar, four large eggs, two cups of dried fruit, a teaspoon of baking soda, a teaspoon of salt, a cup of brown sugar, lemon juice, nuts, and a bottle of whisky.
Sample the whisky to check for quality.
Take a large bowl. Check the whisky again. To be sure it is the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer, beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar and beat again.
Make sure the whisky is still okay. Cry another tup. Turn off the mixer. Break two leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Mix on the turner. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers pry it loose with a drewscriver.
Sample the whisky to check for tonsisticity. Next, sift two cups of salt. Or something. Who cares? Check the whisky. Now sift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Spoon. Of sugar or something. Whatever you can find.
Grease the oven. Turn the cake tin to 350 degrees. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Throw the bowl out of the window, check the whisky again and go to bed. Last comment was by virus2sirus (0 comments | 1121 views) The Salary Theorem Posted by virus2sirus in Wed Feb 21, 2007 3:58 pm
Dilbert's "Salary Theorem" states that "Engineers and scientists can never
earn as much as business executives and sales people."
This theorem can now be supported by a mathematical equation based on the
following two postulates:
Postulate 1: Knowledge is Power.
Postulate 2: Time is Money.
As every engineer knows:
Power = Work / Time
And since: Knowledge = Power
and: Time = Money
It is, therefore, true that
Knowledge = Work / Money
Solving this equation for Money, we get:
Money = Work / Knowledge
Thus, as Knowledge approaches zero, Money approaches infinity, regardless of
the amount of Work done.
Conclusion: The less you know, the more you make. Last comment was by virus2sirus (0 comments | 1184 views) Chinese Name confusion . Posted by virus2sirus in Wed Dec 27, 2006 7:41 pm

During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approached the pastor with an unusual offer:
"Look, I''ll give you $100 if you''ll change the wedding vows. When you get to the part where I''m supposed to promise to ''love, honor and obey'' and ''be faithful to her forever,'' I''d appreciate it if you''d just leave that out."
He passed the minister a $100 bill and walked away satisfied. On the day of the wedding, when it came time for the groom''s vows, the pastor looked the young man in the eye and said:
"Will you promise to prostrate yourself before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life, and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?"
The groom gulped and looked around, and said in a tiny voice, "Yes," then leaned toward the pastor and hissed: "I thought we had a deal."
The pastor put a $100 bill into the groom''s hand and whispered: "She made me a better offer." Last comment was by virus2sirus (2 comments | 1996 views) [Joke] The American Hero! Posted by Ehab in Wed Nov 15, 2006 10:17 am

There was a blind girl who hated herself because of being blind.
She hated everyone except her boyfriend

she would marry her boyfriend
One lucky day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her!
Then she saw everything including her boyfriend....
Her boyfriend then asked her,” Now that u can see, will you
marry me?"
The girl was SHOCKED when she saw that her boyfriend was
blind!
She said,” I am sorry but i can't marry you because u are blind."
Her boyfriend walked away with tears...and said, "Please just take care of my eyes...."

ASUS GeForce 9800 GTX review Posted by Gladiator in Tue Apr 01, 2008 3:49 pm
Just last week we brought you a review on the GeForce 9800 GX2, and today we have a new ASUS board in our test labs. Powered by the GeForce 9800 GTX chip, we put the brand new chip to the test.
Today will see the official launch of the GeForce 9800 GTX as the third member of the GeForce 9 series. Already we have seen the GeForce 9600 GT performing in the mainstream sector, the 9800 GX2 aimed at the high-end $500+ market, and now the 9800 GTX which sits right in-between. There is also a GeForce 9800 GTS on the way, but we will leave that for another occasion.

Last month AMD pleased us all by launching what we considered was the fastest single-card solution on the market to date, the Radeon HD 3870 X2. But we all knew it was only a matter of time before Nvidia's dual-GPU response arrived, potentially putting the company out in front again. Well, that day has come and Nvidia is finally shipping its GeForce 9800 GX2 to retailers, with promises to redefine the high end of the graphics market.
The GX2 contains two G92 GPUs each with 128 unified shader processors running at 1.5GHz, a 600MHz core clock, and 512MB of GDDR 3 video memory running at 1GHz. Nvidia promises to crush benchmark scores with this card and in fact, according to most of the reviews out there, it does. However, at a suggested retail price of $599.99 to $649.99 many might want to consider a different setup such as two 8800 GTs in SLI for maximum performance at the lowest price (about $200-$300 less than the 9800 GX2). Intel announced Monday that it expects to ship a six-core processor to OEMs in the second half of this year. With 1.9 billion transistors and 16MB of L3 cache, the six-core chip, code-named Dunnington, will be built with Intel's new 45 nanometer (nm) technology, according to Pat Gelsinger, a senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Digital Enterprise group. "The big cache and six cores will give customers a nice bump in performance," Gelsinger said during a press briefing today to talk about the company's product roadmap and its upcoming Intel Developer's Forum slated to be held next month in Shanghai.
This announcement comes after AMD confirmed that it has started shipping its triple-core Phenom processors just last week, and again pushes Intel well-ahead of its chief rival. However, it's not necessarily a terribly damaging development for AMD. According to Dan Olds, an analyst with the Gabriel Consulting Group, "for AMD, it just means that they're falling a little bit further behind...a six-core is a big deal, but most desktop software can't really take advantage of dual-core yet..."

It looks like the final details of Nvidia’s GeForce 9800 GTX have escaped ahead of its public debut in the form of some leaked presentation slides at VR-Zone’s forums. The new single-chipset flagship card will reportedly have a shader clock of 1.69GHz, a core clock of 675MHz, a memory clock of 1.1GHz, and 512MB of GDDR3 memory.
Though Nvidia is yet to confirm any of this, a GPU-Z screenshot and a 3DMark06 score from Expreview seem to back up the latest leaks concerning Nvidia's forthcoming GeForce 9800 GTX. Cards are due to be announced on March 25 and should sell between $299 and $349 depending on the vendor and the card's features. Microsoft and Yahoo met on Monday to discuss Microsoft's takeover offer for the Internet company, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The meeting was said to be the first since Microsoft made its unsolicited offer for Yahoo, worth nearly $42 billion, on January 31. Yahoo rejected the offer as inadequate last month. The session was intended to allow Microsoft to present its vision of a combined company, and Yahoo executives mostly listened, the Journal quoted one of the sources as saying.

Ten Rules for Business Success Posted by Ehab in Mon Mar 03, 2008 12:13 pm
There was an article about France's best known blogger, Loïc Le Meur, in the Financial Times. He has ten rules for achieving success in business. I found it quite interesting and copied it all here:
* Don’t wait for a revolutionary idea. It will never happen. Just focus on a simple, exciting, empty space and execute as fast as possible
* Share your idea. The more you share, the more you get advice and the more you learn. Meet and talk to your competitors.
* Build a community. Use blogging and social software to make sure people hear about you.
* Listen to your community. Answer questions and build your product with their feedback.
* Gather a great team. Select those with very different skills from you. Look for people who are better than you.
* Be the first to recognise a problem. Everyone makes mistakes. Address the issue in public, learn about and correct it.
* Don’t spend time on market research. Launch test versions as early as possible. Keep improving the product in the open.
* Don’t obsess over spreadsheet business plans. They are not going to turn out as you predict, in any case.
* Don’t plan a big marketing effort. It’s much more important and powerful that your community loves the product.
* Don’t focus on getting rich. Focus on your users. Money is a consequence of success, not a goal. Last comment was by Ehab (0 comments | 474 views) Make your Vista's admin account acts like in XP Posted by Ehab in Wed Feb 21, 2007 8:55 am
Make your Vista's admin account acts like in XP -- Always in full control!
Note: This guide is done by Tantawi
First let me start by saying that one of the main features of Windows Vista is the new user accounts security enhancements, but sometimes, defaults don't meet everyone's taste when it comes to how we deal with our PCs. I for one, always used full administrator accounts since I first knew what a Windows user account is, and never been hit by a virus/spyware/crap, using common sense and updated AV software, so I don't want to give permissions to myself or face strange error messages every time I do a simple task on my computer.
You know UAC feature in Windows Vista, and you all know how to disable it, this is not the purpose of this thread, because even after you disable UAC, you'll have other prompts about folder/file permissions errors sometimes (I faced it in strange, unexpected occasions, like deleting an empty folder for a program left by the uninstaller), or you'll need to right click and select "Run as Administrator" for most applications to work/install correctly.
That's because Microsoft made the administrators accounts (in local administrators group) run as standard users, unless we give permissions for every and each administrative tasks, with a little difference when UAC is turned on/off
Enough introductions, lets get our hands dirty:
*************************************
Remember that cute "Administrator" account you see when you login to safe mode? That's the built-in administrator account that's installed by default, and disabled by default too, after a little digging-in I made this tutorial that'll let you enable and use this account in normal mode, and with a little other tweak, enjoying an XP-like administrator experience, while UAC is left ON (or off, it doesn't matter), but with no prompts or right clicks.
For Windows Vista Ultimate/Business/Enterprise:
1- Click Start, and type "secpol.msc" in the search area and click Enter. (You may receive a prompt from UAC, approve/login and proceed)
2- In the left list, choose "Local Policies", then "Security Options"
3- Set "Accounts: Administrator account status" to Enabled.
4- Set "User Account Control: Admin Approval Mode for the Built-in Administrator account" to Disabled.
For Windows Vista Home Basic/Home Premium:
1- Click Start, and type "cmd" in the search area, right click on "Command Prompt" and select 'Run as Administrator".
2- In the command prompt type "net users Administrator /active'" (Note the capital "A" in Administrator) and press Enter, you will get a confirmation as "The command completed successfully".
3- Click Start, and type "regedit" in the search area and click Enter, navigate to: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ System]
Double click on "FilterAdministratorToken" and set it to "0"
*************************************
Now log-off, and you'll see new account named "Administrator" is available, click on it to login.
Now you are the master of your domain! I recommend if you're going to use this method is to apply it as soon as you do a fresh install of Windows, so you can simply delete whatever administrator you've created in the setup process, and make this one the "real" administrator for your PC, also you can rename this new admin account or change its password like any other account from "User Accounts" in the Control Panel.
A last note: Please apply this procedures only if you know what you're doing. Disabling security features in the operating system is not something recommended to the average Joe, and for sure I won't be held accountable for any damaging happens to your system or files resulting from running a full administrator account all the time.
Enjoy!
Special thanks to Farstrider for providing the location of the relevant register keys that made applying this method to the home versions of Vista possible! Last comment was by Ehab (2 comments | 1812 views)
